New Attendee Orientation
This was a great way to hear some of the concerns museums professionals have across the globe. In a room full of approx. 50 people we heard:
*There are slightly under 1,000 attendees at conference this year.
*Average number of attendees per workshop session could range from 10-50 depending on the topic.
*This conference is international and in fact there is Post-Conference session called In Dialogue with International Children's Museums where hey will discuss concerns such as that of on organization in Nairobi, Africa who for political reasons have to call their museum an "Educational Park".
*Alcohol consumption in children's museums seems to be a question several organizations have. The facilitators (not sure where they are from but they states Boston area) allow these beverages at for rented birthday parties, before and after museum hours of operations, donor events and all through a contracted vendor (who probably carry the beer/wine and/or liquor license). It seems these organizations are trying to cater to parents on another level. Disney offers libations, Chuck E Cheese offers tap beer...does it encourage interaction between parent and child? This is a hot button topic for museums and their Board of Directors. Weigh-in and post your comments below.

Hmm, would I want alcohol for the 2nd floor? On a daily basis, probably not. Nor for a birthday party rental. However if there was an after-hours event, I would be fine with this. If anything, it would probably be expected.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, I would be partaking as well.

I agree with RK. Not sure I'd want alcohol served on a daily basis (Yard House or winery sponsor?) - but I suspect it could be a quick way to make the cover of Library Journal. Hmm...
ReplyDeleteDid they say if conference attendance was up or down this year?
ReplyDeleteThe term museum has never seemed to promote the play and fun aspect so perhaps "educational park" is not so bad.
They did not say whether attendance was up or down this year.
ReplyDeleteI waited for quite some time to talk to they representative from Education Park but we had to leave to the museum. Surprisingly, I didn't run into her again during the conference.
