First Impression Arizona Science Center

The Arizona Science Center is located in Heritage Park and boasts 300+ galleries. We had a four block hike over to the museum (quite warm - but we brought water for the walk). The staff seemed nervous and not quite prepared for arrival. Shifting our line of about 80 people 3 or 4 times outside.

First impressions are that is a large concrete building, seems a bit imposing, and certainly substantial - which seems to be the standard based on other science museums I've visited (Exploratorium, Houston, Santa Ana Discovery Science Center). Lots of concrete, lots of metal, sharp edges, a bit stark. That environment seems very fitting for an adult art museum or loft event space, but seems very different from what we are used to in children's spaces (color, texture, softness).

All of the exhibits were scaled for older children (starting at my waist), were VERY text heavy, and contained typically only one small interactive piece. In my experience taking Savannah to a children's museum and watching children on our PALS - they want to run up and test out the interactive piece first and read later. Wess and I noticed this with almost every exhibit in the museum. The age range 8 at the earliest and up - Wess thinks mostly middle school.

Having some trouble loading the pictures from camera - more to follow.
